Getting Your Spartan Card

New Retirees

As a new retiree, you can come to the ID Office to obtain your Spartan Card during our business hours. When you come to acquire your Spartan Card, you will need to provide a government issued photo ID (passport, US driver's license, and US State ID). The photo for your Spartan Card will be taken at our office during your visit. Online photo upload for retirees is not available at this time.

Please note, your retirement information must be fully processed by MSU Central HR for Identity Services to see your account updated to the retiree status. If you are unsure whether or not you are in our system as a retiree, please contact us at 517-355-4500 prior to coming to our office.

Current Retirees

If you are a current retiree who did not obtain your retiree Spartan Card, you can come to the ID Office to obtain your Spartan Card during our business hours. When you come to acquire your Spartan Card, you will need to provide a government issued photo ID (passport, US driver's license, and US State ID). The photo for your Spartan Card will be taken at our office during your visit. Online photo upload for retirees is not available at this time.

If your Spartan Card photo is over 6 years old, you can come to the ID Office for a free Spartan Card replacement. Identity Services encourages you to have an up-to-date picture on your ID card and therefore will not charge for these replacements.

Spartan Card Mailing Option:  If you are unable to come to the ID Office in-person, we offer the option of having a non-photo (a Spartan 'S' will be displayed instead of your photo on the card), non-prox (contains no technology for door access and meals) Spartan Card mailed to you.

To request to have the Spartan Card mailed, do the following:

  1. From your MSU email address, email us your request to idoffice@msu.edu with the Subject: Online Retiree Spartan Card Request
  2. In the email, please include your name, ZPID (MSU Employee ID Number), and the mailing address to send the ID card to. If you do not have your ZPID, you may reach out the IT Service Desk for further assistance at (517) 432-6200.
